I created a cyberpunk-styled futuristic infinite Runner, which takes place in a dystopian city. The reason why I chose a Cyberpunk City was because I’m really fascinated by the idea of technological advancement in a dystopian world that’s corrupt and chaotic. For this project I hope I can bring something new to the cyberpunk genre giving my own interpretation of the well known science fiction Sub genre.
The Theme and Genre for my Infinite Runner I have chosen are Cyberpunk and Scale (Giant or Miniature) ,I want my game to take place in a bustling high tech low life dystopian city where the player will feel like a tiny ant compared to the colossal buildings touching the clouds and blocking out the sky.
I want the gameplay of my Infinite runner to be quite similar to Subway Surfers, an endless suburban side swipe game with a Cyberpunk twist. The game will have three paths like Subway Surfers where the player can swipe to dodge obstacles offering some variety in terms of challenge by having to swipe up ,swipe down, swipe across etc
The Story of the game isn't exactly War and Peace, it's pretty simple. You play as a street kid in a cyberpunk city running away from the authorities after stealing Some Cybernetic Tech from Arisato Industries.
The reason why I chose the theme Scale was because I was intrigued by the idea of a Gigantic cyberpunk city where the player looks small in comparison. This idea came to me because I recently played Little Nightmares 2 , which brilliantly handles this theme and concept.
In terms for Visual Design for my Infinite Runner i’m aimed towards a hybrid of stylized and realism something that’s minimalist the best example would be the Borderlands Franchise specifically Borderlands 3, Persona 3 as I believe it would work the best for my game.I didn’t want to go for photorealistic and not cartoony either. For the inspiration of my Visual Style I wanted to take some influence from the manga artist style such as Tite Kubo From Bleach, the webtoon PROJECT DIVIDER and Some Shading techniques from Kohei Horikoshi. In terms of lighting I believe going for something quite similar to the indie Game Stray because I really admire the neon lighting.
In terms of my Overall style For my Infinite Runner game I want to a mixture of a stylized art style combined with a little realism for the Architecture and the obstacles the player would have to constantly evade in my Infinite Runner as it links in with the Cyberpunk Genre Thematically as a lot of Cyberpunk media has a few realistic looking buildings from Brutalsim to the confined Hong Kong architecture being claimed and taken over by Bright Neon Lights giving the illusion of Progression and Creativity while Mega Corporations are behind the Scenes pulling the strings.
For the Level Design of my Cyberpunk Infinite Runner I would like to implement similar game mechanics in Subway Surfers for example the player will be able to slide across and evade obstacles in a three lane system having obstacles blocking the player’s way some examples being Cyberpunk Drones or Cyberpunk Police Blocks or Barriers. The Game will start off pretty slow and initiative to help get the player use to the controls and gradually the Game will speed up becoming more fast pace to convey the player that they’re a fugitive being hounded by the Police and more of a threat to Mega Corporations.
In terms of power ups mechanics for my infinite runners I liked the idea of the play collecting Cybernetic Data chips where if the player collects enough of them not only do they gain points. It also helps fill a dash metre it activates a speed boost similar to sonic dash for a short period of time because of all the cybernetics they picked up.
I really admired the composition of the Cyberpunk city, appealing lighting and the contrast of darker and bleak colours like dark greys accompanied by bright neon colours creating a technological Facade.
For obstacles I plan to use police drones, which the player has to roll under as it links in with the subtle storytelling for my Infinite runner. As the main character is a fugitive on the run from the Corpos being hounded by the Authorities for stealing cyberware from Arisato Industries.
Another Obstacle, would be cyberpunk-esque road block signs where the player has to jump over them in time. The reason behind this idea works well with subtle storytelling of my infinite runner where the city is dilapidated and decaying contrasted by the neon lights.
For my Main Menu Screen I want to take some influence from the Persona franchise mainly focusing on Persona 5’s stylish, memorable and creative menus.
In terms of the overall style of my game I want to create a mix of stylized art style and realistic artstyle game as I believe it will help my game stand out from the Crowd being a more artistic game with engaging gameplay similar to the Persona 5
